Encaustic Paintings

Encaustic is translated as burning in. This means using heat to fuse the layers. There are up to 10 different layers on each painting. Some of them are scraped back to expose these layers, some added and fused together. Sometimes objects such as rusty metal, gravel, wire mesh and other discarded pieces are enclosed in the wax creating an aged look, or a lush surface. My paintings evolve on the surface and I am guided by what “shows up”. I create a visual archive by studying both historical art and current contemporary art. When something shows up in the painting that reminds me of a favourite artist or technique I know I am on the right path. This does not mean I copy other artists but am inspired by their work when it meshes with my own artistic style.
